Although, I hesitate to call it a review. More like random thoughts that I hope make some sort of sense in the end.
Anyway, the cd has three tracks on it: 'Blind', 'Queen of Angels' and 'Anna'. Both Jesper and Henrik share lead vocals on 'Blind', Henrik has lead vocals on 'Queen of the Angels' and 'Anna' is Jesper's song.
'Blind' is a very catchy song, and Henrik and Jesper's voices blend quite well together. I often find myself walking around singing it quite regularly these days.
'Queen of Angels'...I hate to say this because otherwise it's a great song, but Henrik Westerberg's voice isn't exactly setting me aflame here. I mean, I love the music, the song has some pretty awesome guitar riffs in it and the lyrics are just fine. At first, I kept thinking that maybe my obvious bias towards Jesper was clouding my judgment of Henrik's voice, but after repeated listens...I don't think that's it at all, at least I hope not. I try not to let things like affect me.
Although, I can't help but think that this song would be perfect if it were Jesper singing lead instead. *coughs* I don't really have a problem with Henrik's vocals on 'Blind', but on 'Queen' he does this...this...thing with his voice, I don't really know how to explain it. I don't know, but I'm reserving the right to take back what I just said at a later point should my opinion change, lol.
That brings us to 'Anna'...which is by far and away my favorite song on the cd, and no, not just because it's the one Jesper sings lead on. It really is a lovely song, and it has a message. It's about an abused woman finally finding the courage to leave the abusive relationship. I just wish there was a song on the cd that really does Jesper's voice justice--not that he doesn't sound absolutely wonderful here, he does, very much so. But...I know his voice is capable of more.
Some things I found pretty interesting on the back of the cd box: It says all songs were written by Jesper and Henrik, and that all songs were produced by Jesper. Also, that the guitar on 'Blind' was performed by Henrik Westerberg, the guitar on 'Queen of Angels' and 'Anna' was performed by Magnus Henriksson and all other instruments were performed by Jesper Tydén.
I wouldn't really know how to classify the music by genre...it's not my strong suit, but it's what I'd call melodic guitar pop/rock, maybe? I don't know, lol. You can hear samples of the songs from the cd as well as other songs at
The Drunken Sailors Website, if you'd like.
And...I think that'll do it for now. Should I think of anything else I'll edit it in later. Hope this makes sense, lol.
