My uni/department didn't offer a possibility to study in Vienna, so I took the nearest pretty city instead. :) I'm definitely going to learn Hungarian, but I haven't yet decided what else I'm going to do. I've visited Budapest a lot in the last two years because of their Tanz der Vampire production and love both the city and its musicals. Hungarians are the best actors I've seen, even their third cast people would be stars in most other countries. The quality, atmosphere and energy of the productions is amazing, and the TdV production is unbelievably beautiful visually. There are some things I'd change in the Hungarian Elisabeth production (sets and choreographies for example), but the actors are amazing.
It took me a while to get into Marie Antoinette, but now I have the whole CD playing in my head all the time. I also got the libretto and while it isn't quite as brilliant as I could have expected, it's still delightful and great and I'd love to see the musical on stage. There are rumours of it coming to Vienna, so perhaps I can make a little train trip from Budapest...
Neither Uwe or Máté is my favourite Death, but out of those two I prefer Máté. Uwe is an obvious part of the Battle of Deaths in the fandom, but I guess that Máté was just such a big thing in Vienna that he became "the next Death". They're so different that they're bound to divide opinions.
Hi, sorry for slow reply, but I visit this site rarely - anyway thank you for nice comment on my page. I'm really glad you liked my video! I try to tell stories by making videos and that's why the chronology in this one was a bit diffrent.
yeah, I;ve heard Mate singing "Unstillbare Gier" and really enjoyed that, maybe he will make good Krolock someday ;) Do you have link to the video you wrote me? I can't recall seeing this and it sounds really interesting, would love to hear about lady who had seen "Elisabeth" 230 times!
I was working as an au pair in Vienna, and next year I'll be studying half a year in Budapest. :) Somehow I feel more at home in Vienna than in Finland, it feels like "my" city. In Switzerland I've been for about two hours, but I'd certainly love to see more of it.
I actually discovered Kunze's musicals through Tanz der Vampire, I borrowed the Vienna cast recording from my cousin and instantly fell in love with it. I disliked German language before that, but now I'm minoring in it at the university. ;) After that came then Elisabeth and Mozart!, and Rebecca premiered in Vienna when I was there so I saw it many times. Seeing the original cast of Elisabeth must have been interesting; when I look at the cast now they seem so amusingly 80's and have developed vastly since then, both as actors and singers (except Uwe, whose "singing" made me cover my ears when I saw him as Taaffe in Rudolf. But in Essen he still sang well.). I find it funny that now Ethan Freeman is again playing the Narrator part, this time in Marie Antoinette.
My favourite line... There are too many, I could quote half a libretto, but from Elisabeth I currently love "Als wär' nichts, nichts, gar nichts genug", and also "Die Welt sucht vergebens den Sinn meines Lebens, denn ich gehör nur mir", because it so nicely and self-ironically laughs at the point of the whole musical.
I know little about German :-( I just learn how to pronounce them and sing the songs ;P I tried to read the article through Google translator. It's hard for me...>,,<<br /> Now I know clearly why you ask me that question~ It's really a different way to comprehend the show.Yes,in some ways we are in a black world.O(∩_∩)O
Nice to see other Scandinavians here. :) We have the same Anglo-centric problem, it's a miracle they did Elisabeth. The Municipal Theatre of Helsinki performed Rebecca this season, but they screwed up things like marketing so even though everyone who had seen it seemed to love it, it's quitting only after a year to make place for Mary Poppins. Phantom we haven't even had here, there isn't a suitable theatre in the whole country. :P
Wow, you have lived much abroad! As much as I like Finland, I regularly want to travel somewhere, and living abroad is always interesting. Which of those countries was your favorite? :)
I've ever watch the video of "Tanzen der Vampair".The awful quality made me loose my patient.. @_@ But Steve Barton's performance is always great~~!Someday I must watch it again...
Yes,Hong Kong has changed.I can feel it by Hong Kong's TV programs day by day... however, when I visited there in 2006,I found it very unfamilar for me.But some of my friends often go shopping there.they feel closer to it.^^
I think "CATS" is one of the most popular musicals in China. It introduces many Chinese to musicals. This year, they will have a tour in China again(but not in Guangzhou again...sad..).Last time I think they only used the half of the stadium to qualify a magic world~Tugger hit my head and Rumpleteazer robbed my bag during the break...^^ so funny~!
I know the vlogger "lynnfou" from elisabethism.net. She's a super fan of Máté.XD. Your translation make the clip more funny.lol..thanks~
The sad part is, there have been many dark historic musicals on Broadway, but most of them did not do well. (And in some cases they did brilliantly in Europe) Dracula, Scarlet Pimpernel, Pirate Queen, Lestat, Frankenstein, Jekyll & Hyde, and Martin Guerre to name a few.
Tanz was a disaster, although it shouldn't have been. You can actually find an entire audio of it on youtube and it's been completely changed from the original. The main problem was Michael Crawford put a lot of money into the show and therefore was given a lot of creative control. Then the director was absent a lot so Michael kind of took over. His excuse was he didn't want to play "The Phantom" character again...:(
I know for sure Drew has sung Totale Finsternis at Donaunselfest. Not sure about any other songs.
Steve Barton was amazing. Thomas is the only runner up as Krolock for me. Máté makes a much better Herbert, in my opinion. ^_^
It is definitely an out pouring of her emotions. More a diary of sorts for her. Her poems are nothing in a collection that I would like to read for pleasure. Many in her era wrote in journals, I find it unique that she dove into poetry.
Am Danish and live in Denmark now, but have lived 7 years in Switzerland, 3 years in the US and 2 in Munich, Germany. Saw the original production of Elisabeth in Vienna in 1992 at Theater an der Wien.
Favorite Elisabeth production?
Vienna
Favorite (or dream) Elisabeth/Tod Pairing?
Maya Hakvoort / Máté Kamarás
Favorite scene?
Scene between den Tod + Elisabeth after Sophie has died / Die Schatten werden länger - Act I
Favorite character?
Der Tod
How did you become an Elisabeth fan?
Have been interested in Empress Elisabeth since childhood because of the Romy Schneider films, but became interested in the historical person when I lived in Starnberg - 5 minutes from Possenhofen.

Have you seen any later productions live?

Now I think the white outfit is better...^^

What Máté answered back was soooooo funny! Lol~~However,I still like "Der Letzte Tanz" more.^^
PS.I thanked Lynn for you. ;P
